We’re thrilled to welcome four talented university students to the Solis UK team.
We’re thrilled to welcome four talented university students to the Solis UK team, as they take a break from the lecture halls to begin their industrial placement year. Each brings their own unique background, fresh perspectives, and passion for cyber security. Over the next year, they’ll rotate between teams, gaining hands-on experience in incident response, threat research, dark web monitoring, vulnerability analysis, and more.
Tim
Hi, I’m Tim Tran. I’m studying Computer Science at the University of Reading and currently undertaking my industrial placement year at Solis. I’ve always been interested in cyber security, especially the constant need to adapt to new and evolving cyber threats. When I began looking for a placement, I was hoping to find a company that could give me real-world experience, technical challenges, and the chance to learn from professionals in the cyber security sector. What really drew me to Solis was its strong reputation in the industry and the importance that it attaches to research and learning, and the structured rotational programme it offers, which allows interns to gain experience in multiple areas within cyber security.
Since joining, I’ve also come to really appreciate the working environment here. The people are incredibly friendly and supportive, the company culture is very welcoming, and the office itself is a great place to work: modern, collaborative, and designed to help us all do our best. It’s made settling in so much easier and has reinforced my determination to make the most of my time here.
I’m currently on my first rotation with the CTRL team (Cyber Threat Research Labs), where I’ll be spending six months, before moving on to the Cyber Incident Response (CIM) team. Although I’ve only been here a month, I’ve already had the chance to get stuck into the work that the CTRL team does by creating vulnerability advisories and threat reports, and learning to use a variety of tools and platforms for threat analysis and research. I’ve learned so much in a short space of time, and the support the team has given me has been fantastic. I’ve also been set my first project to work on, which I’m excited about. It’s a great opportunity to understand more about cyber security, learn how to use new tools, and contribute to the company’s mission. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the year and continuing to grow over the coming months.
Sam
Hello, my name is Samuel Mudd, and I’ve just embarked on a placement year as part of my Computer Science BSc at the University of Birmingham. My search for a placement was not fuelled by big-name companies or roles that would look good on my CV. My priority was finding an environment where I could learn, contribute meaningfully, and grow – both technically and creatively. Solis is a company that values curiosity, innovation and mentorship. This felt like the right place to step into the world of cyber security, an area I’ve been very interested in, but hadn’t previously had the chance to explore in depth.
I’m excited to be working with a close-knit team and to start developing a deeper understanding of the real-life challenges and strategies that mould cyber security landscape today. Over the next six months, I’m hoping to build foundational knowledge, sharpen my technical skills, and get involved in impactful projects that go beyond what I’ve learned in the educational system. There’s certainly plenty to learn, but also plenty of time in which to learn it. Excited I would say, is an understatement.
Reila
Hey everyone, my name is Reila and I am one of the cyber placement students at Solis. Having finished my second year of studies at the University of Brighton, I have now been part of Solis for just over a month.
I am currently working within the CIM (Cyber Incident Management) team. Even though I haven’t been here too long, I’ve already gained a lot of valuable hands-on experience. I’ve had the opportunity to triage incidents, create threat intelligence reports, and carry out dark-web monitoring assignments. These and other real-life engagements have made this a really enjoyable and rewarding experience so far. I’ve gained many new skills in a short period of time, and I’m really excited for the months to come. The whole team have been really welcoming and supportive and have made me feel very welcome from day one. I will be joining the Incident Response team for my next rotation, and I am so thrilled to see how I will apply the skills that I have and will be learning on CIM there.
Rei
Hi I’m Rei, and I’m currently in the placement year of my undergraduate cyber security degree. I applied for this placement as I was looking for relevant industry experience and I really liked the approach Solis takes to proactive prevention and incident response. I’m hoping this placement will help me enhance my technical and interpersonal skills as I return for my final year of university.
I’m currently working with the Incident Response team. I’ve been learning the ins and outs of incident response, from the initial triage through to investigations and presenting the final findings. Along with shadowing, I’ve been assisting in investigations, helping me learn all the necessary skills to carry out an incident response investigation. By learning the full IR process, I hope in the future to be able to handle my own investigation from beginning to end. I believe the skills I’m gaining during this first rotation will help me greatly when I move to the MDR (Managed Detection and Response) team in six months.

Conclusion
Tim, Sam, Reila and Rei embody the next generation of cyber security professionals. We’ve been really impressed with the energy, curiosity and fresh thinking they have brought to the team. We’re proud to be able to support their development over the year ahead, and grateful for the commitment and enthusiasm they have shown from day one. We look forward to seeing their skills and confidence grow as they continue to explore new aspects of our work here at Solis.
